As the demand for digital skills continues to surge globally, experts are encouraging Nigerians—especially the youth—to take advantage of accessible online platforms to bridge the growing digital knowledge gap.

A recent report by GetBundi, an edtech platform, revealed that over 100 million young Nigerians lack essential digital skills. Alarmingly, it also found that nearly 85% of Nigerian graduates are ill-prepared for the job market, largely due to an outdated education system that overlooks practical skills such as coding, data analysis, and digital literacy.

This widening skills gap is directly linked to Nigeria’s high unemployment rate and underscores the urgent need for education reform and targeted digital training initiatives.

In response, digital education experts have highlighted key online resources that offer valuable learning opportunities—often at low or no cost.

Experts Recommend Top Platforms

Veteran researcher Tony Dearaujo recommends leveraging platforms like Quora, YouTube, and Udemy to acquire and sharpen digital skills. He describes Quora as a valuable starting point, where users can engage with various topics, ask and answer questions, and build an online presence.

"YouTube is a top-tier platform for learning through video tutorials," Dearaujo added. He advised learners to consider subscribing to YouTube Premium for an uninterrupted learning experience.

For structured and in-depth learning, Dearaujo praised Udemy, one of the largest online course platforms. While many courses require payment, there are numerous free options available covering a wide range of subjects. He emphasized that even a small investment in these courses can yield significant returns in skill development.

Learning from Home: Real-Life Examples

Business consultant Manuel Nelson shared his personal experience with airSlate Automation Academy, a platform that offers over 50 free courses in digital transformation. These include topics such as business process automation, eSignature workflows, and no-code bot creation. Upon completion, learners receive verified certificates that can be showcased on professional platforms like LinkedIn.

Nelson highlighted the platform’s flexibility, allowing users to tailor their learning pace and goals while building practical, in-demand skills.

Similarly, associate marketer David Egbunu recommended Udemy for its wide course selection and adaptability. “You can learn at your own pace, on your own terms,” he said, noting the platform’s appeal to learners from all backgrounds.

Digital marketer Estell Starling emphasized the convenience and accessibility of online education. She noted that learners today can easily explore new interests—from digital photography and creative design to gardening and sustainable living—all from the comfort of their homes.

A Quora user also weighed in, offering practical advice for maximizing online learning. Key tips included eliminating distractions, taking regular breaks, and prioritizing rest to maintain focus and boost retention.
