Nigerian Stars Shine in Premier League Stats as 2024/25 Season Progresses
By Peter Akinbo
As the Premier League enters its 10th matchday of the 2024/25 season, Nigerian footballers are making their presence felt, topping key statistical categories and underlining the growing influence of Super Eagles players in one of the world’s most competitive leagues.
Wilfred Ndidi: Tackling Maestro
Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi remains a standout performer in the Premier League, leading the charts for most successful tackles with 33—tied with Crystal Palace’s Daniel Muñoz. Known for his defensive tenacity, Ndidi has elevated his game this season by adding a creative dimension to his play.
The 27-year-old midfielder has already registered four assists, including a stellar performance against Crystal Palace where he set up both Jamie Vardy and Stephy Mavididi in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Ndidi continued his creative form with a pinpoint cross that led to James Justin’s volley in a 4-2 loss to Arsenal.
Despite being briefly deployed in central defence during a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, Ndidi’s defensive contributions in midfield remain vital for Leicester, with his tackling numbers reinforcing his role as one of the league’s top ball-winners.
Calvin Bassey: Ironman of the Pitch
Fulham centre-back Calvin Bassey has been a model of consistency since his summer switch from Ajax. The 24-year-old leads the Premier League in minutes played, having logged 810 minutes across all nine league matches this season.
Though he experienced a blip with a deflected goal against Aston Villa, Bassey rebounded with strong performances, particularly in Fulham’s win over Nottingham Forest and their 3-1 triumph over Newcastle United—where he played a full match alongside fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi.
Bassey's defensive resilience and ability to adapt quickly to English football have made him indispensable in Marco Silva’s setup, as Fulham aim to solidify their place in the top half of the table.
Ola Aina: Ever-Present Force for Forest
At Nottingham Forest, Ola Aina has proven to be a key asset since his arrival. The versatile full-back has featured in all nine Premier League fixtures this season, showcasing consistency and defensive strength.
His most lauded display came in Forest’s historic 1-0 win at Anfield—their first since 1969—where he played a critical role in blunting Liverpool’s attack and executing a crucial goal-line clearance.
Though Forest suffered a narrow loss to Fulham in their most recent outing, Aina’s performances have earned him praise, and he continues to play a pivotal role in Steve Cooper’s defensive strategy.
Rising Nigerian Influence
The standout performances of Ndidi, Bassey, and Aina exemplify the growing footprint of Nigerian footballers in the Premier League. Their success not only bolsters their respective clubs but also enhances the profile of Nigerian football on the global stage.
With the season still young, these Super Eagles stars will look to maintain or improve their stats, pushing their teams toward their goals and perhaps setting new benchmarks for Nigerian excellence in England’s top flight.
