Trump Gains Ground Across U.S. Counties as 2024 Results Show Broad Rightward Shift
By The New York Times – Updated 4 a.m. Wednesday
Former President Donald J. Trump appears to have made sweeping gains across the United States in the 2024 presidential election, with more than 90 percent of counties reporting near-complete results shifting in his favor, according to an early analysis by The New York Times.
Trump improved upon his 2020 margin in 2,367 counties, while his support declined in only 240. An additional 536 counties had not reported enough votes to be included in the analysis.
Though support for Trump has fluctuated over his three presidential campaigns, early results from Tuesday’s election indicate a notable rightward shift—even in some states that were expected to lean toward Vice President Kamala Harris.
The analysis revealed that Trump’s gains extended across various county types, including Republican strongholds and traditionally Democratic areas, suggesting broader appeal compared to previous cycles.
The Times had not declared a winner in the presidential race as of early Wednesday, but Trump was nearing victory after capturing three of the seven key swing states.
Visual representations of state-level shifts, based on margins of victory and electoral vote weight, further underscored the momentum behind the Republican candidate.
With several battlegrounds still counting ballots, the nation awaits final results in what is shaping up to be another historic election.
