EFCC Releases Bobrisky on Bail After Interrogation Over Bribery Allegation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released popular Nigerian cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, on bail after briefly detaining him for questioning over bribery allegations.

Bobrisky was removed from an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos late Thursday night while reportedly attempting to travel to London. The controversial internet personality later posted a message on social media alerting his followers of the incident.

“Nigerians, help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

Following his arrest, Bobrisky was flown to the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja, where he was interrogated over a voice recording that circulated online, in which he allegedly claimed to have paid N15 million in bribes to EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges.

The voice note was shared by controversial social commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.

Bobrisky reportedly perfected his bail terms late Friday and was subsequently released.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the release on Saturday but declined to offer additional details.

A source close to the investigation revealed that Bobrisky denied all bribery allegations during his interrogation. “He said the fellow who posted the voice note should come over to justify it. He said nobody requested money from him in the EFCC and he didn’t give anyone anything,” the source said.

The EFCC has not publicly disclosed whether further legal action will be pursued regarding the alleged bribery or previous charges related to money laundering.
